Check the couch before the machine
You can use a carpet cleaner on some fabric couches, but only when the furniture maker allows that cleaning method and the machine is suitable for upholstery. A water-safe fabric is not automatically safe to soak or clean with an extractor.
Start with the care label, often under a cushion or beneath the couch. Check the furniture maker’s instructions for your fabric, not just a general cleaning tip for polyester or microfiber. If the label is missing or unclear, ask the maker before using liquid.
What the cleaning codes tell you
- W: water-based spot cleaning is allowed, subject to the furniture’s instructions. This is not blanket permission to use a carpet cleaner.
- S: use the specified water-free solvent method. Do not use a water-spraying carpet cleaner.
- W/S or S/W: water-based or solvent spot treatments may be allowed. Check the approved method and avoid soaking the fabric.
- X: vacuum or brush as directed. Do not apply liquid cleaners.
A useful example is La-Z-Boy’s W-code guidance: it permits water-based shampoo or foam for spot cleaning but says hot-water extraction and steam cleaning are not recommended. Follow that restriction even if a cleaner’s product page says it works on upholstery.
A zipper does not mean the cushion cover can go in the washing machine. The cover and the cushion filling can have different care limits.
If machine cleaning is allowed
Use both sets of instructions: the couch maker’s limits for the fabric and the cleaner’s directions for the upholstery tool, solution and water temperature. If they conflict, stop and ask the furniture maker for a suitable method.
- Vacuum loose crumbs, dust and hair first. Blot a fresh spill with a clean cloth instead of rubbing it deeper into the fabric.
- Test the approved solution and method on a hidden area. Let it dry fully and check for color loss, rings or a changed texture before continuing.
- Work on a small area with the upholstery tool. Apply only as much solution as the instructions allow; avoid soaking seams, cushion filling and the underside.
- Make suction passes without adding more spray, following the cleaner’s directions. More water is not a substitute for pickup.
- Let the couch dry fully before sitting on it or replacing cushions. Keep people and pets away from the wet area.
Drying time varies with the fabric, filling, amount of water and airflow. Do not use a fixed number of hours as proof that the inside of a cushion is dry.
Our portable upholstery cleaners for couches compares tools and reach if you have confirmed that machine cleaning is allowed. Choosing a different cleaner will not change a couch’s care restrictions.
When to get help
Stop if color transfers during the test, the fabric changes texture, or the couch’s instructions rule out extraction. A stain that remains after an allowed treatment is a reason to reassess, not keep soaking the same spot.
For a missing label, delicate fabric, leather, or a couch that needs cleaning across large areas, ask the furniture maker or an upholstery-cleaning professional for a suitable approach. This guide’s fabric-cleaning steps do not apply to leather.
After an allowed machine-cleaning job, follow our after-use cleanup guide for the supported models before storing the cleaner.
