BUY WITH YOUR HOME IN MIND

Start with the couch, not the tank

A portable upholstery cleaner sprays cleaning solution onto fabric and draws the dirty liquid into a separate tank. It can help with a drink spill or a small dirty patch, but the right choice depends on the fabric, the area you clean and where the machine can sit.

For broad cushions, the Hoover offers wide and narrow tools. The Max Pet adds a self-cleaning stain tool. The Kenmore gives you more tank space and reach for several cushions. The Mini is lighter to carry out for an occasional spot.

These are wet spot cleaners for suitable fabric upholstery. They are not a replacement for a regular vacuum, and a larger tank does not prove better stain removal.

Read the care label first

Check the couch maker’s instructions before using water or cleaning solution. A W or W/S label can permit water-based cleaning, but it does not automatically allow an extraction machine. Some furniture makers rule out extraction or steam even for W fabrics. Follow the instructions for the exact fabric and cushion filling. S means solvent-based cleaning; X generally means vacuuming or brushing only. Do not use these wet cleaners on those fabrics unless the furniture maker explicitly allows it.

If the label is missing or unclear, ask the furniture maker before buying a machine for that couch. Test the recommended solution in a hidden area as directed. A removable cushion cover is not automatically machine washable.

Choose a tool that sits flat on the fabric

A wider head can cover a broad, flat cushion with fewer overlapping passes. It may be less convenient around a curved armrest or a narrow gap. The head needs good contact with the fabric to draw liquid back out.

The Hoover includes a 7-inch WidePath tool and a smaller TightSpot tool. The Kenmore pairs a 6.5-inch wide head with a 3.5-inch stain tool. Those choices are useful if you move between large cushion faces and smaller areas.

The Mini’s 4-inch tool is a simpler choice for small, accessible spots. The Max Pet’s self-cleaning stain tool focuses on easier rinsing afterward. Tool width and cleanup features help with different parts of the job; neither proves that one machine removes every stain better.

Plan where the base will sit

Check the path from a wall outlet to a stable place beside the couch. Then allow enough hose slack to reach the cushion without pulling or tipping the machine. Follow the cleaner’s placement instructions rather than balancing it on an armrest to gain reach.

The Kenmore has the longest confirmed hose and cord in this shortlist. That can help around a larger couch, but the full hose length is not the distance you can reach from every position. You may still need to move the base.

Match tank space to the job

For one small spill, a light machine with a small tank may be enough. For several cushions, more tank space can reduce refill trips. The Kenmore offers the most clean-water capacity here; the Mini offers the least weight to carry.

You also need to empty the dirty-water tank. Do not assume one fill will clean an entire sectional, or that using more solution gives better results. A large or deeply soaked area may be a better job for a professional upholstery cleaner.

Allow for drying and cleanup

Vacuum loose crumbs and hair before wet cleaning. Use the solution and amount directed by the machine and furniture makers. Avoid soaking the fabric or repeatedly spraying the same cushion to chase a stain.

Allow the fabric and filling to dry fully before normal use. Drying time depends on the material, how wet it gets and airflow, so a fixed promise would be misleading. Keep children and pets away from the cleaning area and follow the solution’s instructions.

Afterward, empty and rinse the tanks and clean the tools as directed. Let the parts dry before storage. The Max Pet’s self-cleaning stain tool and the Mini’s HydroRinse attachment help with part of that cleanup; they do not replace the whole routine.
