BUY WITH YOUR HOME IN MIND

Start with where the machine will sit

On stairs, a cleaner’s weight is only part of the decision. You also need a place to put it while the hose reaches the carpet. A light machine with a short hose may mean more stops to move it. A larger tank saves refill trips but adds water weight.

For occasional spots, start with the light Mini. Consider the Vacmaster if you want more hose reach while keeping the body fairly light. The Max Pet adds a self-cleaning stain tool, while the Kenmore offers a longer cord and more tank space for several spots at once.

Check reach before you buy

Look at your nearest outlet and the floor or landing where you could place the cleaner. Follow the machine’s instructions for placement. Keep the body upright and stable, with the cord out of the walking path. Do not balance it on a narrow step or pull it along by the hose.

Measure the route from that position to the spots you want to clean, including bends around a stair edge or railing. Leave some slack. The full hose length is not the same as the distance you can reach from the side of the machine.

The Vacmaster and Kenmore have longer hoses than the two BISSELL models here. That may help with reach, but it does not tell you how many steps you can clean without moving. That depends on your stairs and where the cleaner can safely sit.

Vacmaster’s instructions say to keep the machine on the floor or at the bottom of the stairs, never on a step or furniture. Check the placement rules for whichever model you choose. If the hose cannot reach from a permitted position, choose a different setup rather than stretching the hose or cord.

Think about the job, not just the tank

For a single spill, a small tank may be enough. For several dirty steps, a larger tank can cut refill trips. It does not tell you how well a cleaner removes stains or how quickly the carpet dries.

Remember the trip back to the sink, too. You will need to empty dirty water as well as refill clean water. Pick a weight you are comfortable carrying and follow the instructions before moving the machine.

Check the tool as well as the machine

Look at the flat tread, the upright front of each step and the corners beside the wall. Consider whether the included tool will fit those areas. A wider head is not always easier to use around a tight corner.

Do not assume an optional stair tool fits every cleaner from the same brand. Check its exact model compatibility before buying it. All four cleaners here include a stain tool. The Kenmore also includes a wider head; choose the one that fits the part of the step you are cleaning.

Before wet cleaning

Check the carpet maker’s care instructions and test the recommended solution in a hidden area. Vacuum loose dirt and pet hair first. Use the machine’s directions for spraying and extracting rather than soaking the carpet. Keep people and pets off the cleaned steps until they are dry.

When a portable cleaner is the wrong tool

For loose hair, dust or crumbs, start with a vacuum. A spot cleaner is for wet cleaning, not a replacement for regular vacuuming.

If the entire staircase needs washing, think about how much hand scrubbing, moving and tank emptying you want to do. A rental or professional service may suit a bigger job better. If your carpet cannot be wet cleaned, none of these machines is the right choice for it.
